Why Did The Riots Happen?
Maria hertogh was born an Eurasian girl to dutch roman catholic parents in java in 1937. during world war 2, maria hertogh and her parents were separated. Maria eventually fell under the care of Che aminah, a muslim woman. however in 1949, maria parents found her and appealed to take back their daughter. Maria's case was brought to court. The desicion of the court was to let maria's natural parents tho keep maria. Che aminah however  appealed against the court order and was successful. Sometime later maria was then married to a malay teacher. Maria was only 13 at that time. The marriage was not recognised she was underage and her natural parents consent was not sought. Maria was then returned to her natural parents. The Muslims were angered as they felt that the Muslim law was not respected and coverage by the newspapers made the Muslims more enraged. They felt that the British and dutch were not sentive to the feeling of the Muslims. In December 1950, Che aminah  appealed for maria to be returned to her care only to be rejected by the court. when the verdict was released, it enraged the Muslims
